Inspired to travel

As many other students, I wish to go home once a year and wish the transcontinental tickets can be more affordable. 7 years of living in the US, I have been home 6 times and I have spent approximately from $850 to $1700 for a round trip ticket. Since gas prices are up and will continue to rise, I don’t see airline tickets to go down at any time soon. So do I want to spend 4 months of rent for a ticket or find a way to get a free ticket?
